Who would have imagined that the burdock would one day become the source of inspiration behind the invention of Velcro hoop and loop tapes? After a warm summer trek through the woods with his dog, Swiss Engineer George de Mestral, observed that the burdock seeds were found attached to his clothing and his pet’s fur. With eagerness to extract the mechanism behind the seeds latching on and refusing to let go, George put the seeds under a microscope and keenly observed that they were covered with hundreds of spiny hooks that got attached to anything with a loop.
