Bricks are used in constructions at all levels. Construction using bricks dates back to 7000BC. Bricks are one of the oldest construction materials which are widely used even now. It is due to its durability, availability and low cost. Initially, sundried bricks were used in constructions, later as in all other fields, the advent of technology lead to different types of bricks with varying characters depending upon raw materials used in its construction.
Some of the types of bricks used in India are sundried bricks, burnt clay bricks, f ly ash bricks, concrete bricks, engineering bricks, calcium silicate bricks and eco-bricks. Today bricks are made with raw materials such as cement, small stones, sand and slag using machines. Brick-making machines are environment-friendly and energy-efficient.
The industries are expected to grow due to an increase in the need of houses due to the increasing global population. According to the ‘Housing For All By 2030’ initiative by World Bank around 300 million houses will be constructed for three billion people.
