4APRIL, 2025Empowering Defence through Indigenous InnovationIndia is in a transformational phase of its defence electronics manufacturing sector with a potent strategic intent impelling industrial evolution. With the geopolitical table toppling and becoming more and more intricate, the area of indigenous capability development has taken the lead. All of this is changing the trajectory of this sector, as much as the government is prioritizing self-reliance in the critical defence technologies. Comprising communication systems, radar, avionics and their related electronic warfare, defence electronics has become a bastion of modern defence infrastructure. Domestic design and production capabilities have seen a surge with both state owned enterprises and private firms coming in on the production front where once it was reserved for imports. It is reducing the dependence on foreign suppliers while strengthening innovation and technological resilience at a pace. The value chain is actively integrating startups and mid-sized companies into the defence value chain, increasing the agility and responsiveness in the industrial base.At the same time, the defence public sector undertakings are also expanding their R&D footprint, creating partnerships with the academic institutions, adopting advanced technologies such as AI, robotics and IoT to improve their product offerings. This is not a change to replace imported systems, but to develop cutting edge, export worthy solutions that meet global benchmarks. Production is being streamlined and supply chain has been made smoother with the establishment of dedicated defence manufacturing zones and corridors. In addition, the increasing cooperation between defence forces and the manufacturing industry means that the solutions are not only technologically advanced, but also mission ready and field tested. In this special issue, we introduce you to the top companies from this segment.
