9NOVEMBER 2025BEML, TESMEC PARTNER TO BRING ADVANCED MINING TECH TO INDIAGX GROUP TO INVEST 500 CR IN INDIA FOR PHOTONICS CHIPSBEML has formed a partnership with Italy's Tesmec to bring advanced surface miner technology to India. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), seeks to enhance the efficiency and environmental sustainability of mining operations.Surface miners are specialized equipment tailored for open-cast mining. In contrast to conventional drilling and Dutch broadband and connectivity technology company GX Group will invest 500 crore in India to manufacture indigenous photonics modules and chip systems for next-generation broadband, 5G, 6G, and quantum communications, the company said on Friday. The firm has set up a new entity, GX Quantum Photonics Pvt. Ltd, which will mark its entry into the segment and lead local manufacturing in partnership with SMART Photonics BV of the Netherlands and Invest International.blasting techniques, these machines can directly cut and crush rock and soil, thereby minimizing dust, vibration, and environmental repercussions. The alliance between BEML and Tesmec is anticipated to facilitate safer, cleaner, and more rapid mining within India's expanding mineral industry.BEML currently provides a broad array of mining machinery, including hydraulic excavators, bulldozers, and wheel loaders. By incorporating state-of-the-art surface mining technologies into its offerings, the company fortifies its role as a comprehensive provider of mining solutions. This initiative also aids BEML's foray into underground mining with equipment such as mine cruisers and load haul dumpers. It highlights the company's robust dedication to innovation and sustainable mining methodologies.BEML Limited, classified as a Schedule `A' company under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, plays a crucial role in supporting India's essential sectors, including Defence, Rail, Power, Mining, and Infrastructure.Founded in 1965 with an initial turnover of 5 crore, BEML has experienced substantial growth over the years. Presently, with its varied business portfolio, the company boasts an impressive turnover that exceeds 4,300 crore. Photonics technology is crucial for high-speed, energy-efficient communication networks. The new venture will produce Indium Phosphide (InP)-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs) used in optical data transmission, LiDAR systems, and quantum devices. The company said the move aligns with the government's push for domestic semiconductor and optics manufacturing. "Through GX Quantum Photonics, we are creating India's first photonics modules and chipsets designed, developed, and built domestically," said Paritosh Prajapati, chief executive officer, GX Group. "This marks a shift from importing optical technology to exporting innovation."The investment is set to generate 300 highly skilled positions and will establish a research and manufacturing center focused on photonics modules, co-packaged optics, and AI-ready optical systems. According to Prajapati, GX Group intends to provide components for telecom networks, hyperscale data centers, and the EV LiDAR sectors.Johan Feenstra, the CEO of SMART Photonics BV, remarked that this collaboration combines India's goal of achieving "technological sovereignty" with the Dutch proficiency in optical chip production. "Together, we will set new benchmarks in optical innovation and energy-efficient data infrastructure," Feenstra said.
