| |JUNE 20205Economic development in India is incumbent to a great extent on agriculture and allied sectors. The contribution of agriculture to the country's economy was more than 17 percent in 2017 and it continues to grow with the increasing demand for mechanization. Although we have ramped up farm mechanization in India and continue to do so, we are still way behind the level of adoption in other leading countries in this field. While India's level of farm mechanization is somewhere around 40 percent (as per 2017-18 report), the same is way more in countries like USA (95 percent), Brazil (75 percent) and China (57 percent). However, the reason to be upbeat is that despite lagging behind the rate of growth has been considerable over the recent past. The growth rate in agricultural machinery sales has been close to 4 percent recently. The agricultural machinery sales in the country is likely to experience a growing trend in the years to come particularly attributing to the factors such as increasing availability of farm power, unprecedented sales of tractors and power tillers, and positive outlook of institutional credit policies coupled with rising government intervention to boost the rate of mechanization in the country to meet the growing food demand. The change is evident all over the world with the industry witnessing adoption of modern technologies by farmers to increase farm yield and meet the soaring demand for food. Traditional farming techniques such as plows, tillage, and seeders are now being replaced with various modern agricultural machinery.
